Interview Tips

We know it seems obvious, but so many people fall over at this point and make simple errors. You need to do everything you can to ensure you perform your best at interview. Our management professionals have years of experience on both sides of the table and here are their Top 10 Interview tips:

1. Dress smartly and act positively
Dress smartly and act positively. If in any doubt of the correct dress code, always adopt formal business attire. Handshakes are important too. A firm but not crushing handshake is required as well as good eye contact, especially for a panel interview. Use positive body language such as open arms and hands. Do not cross your arms or fidget. If you think you may be likely to do this through nerves, place your hands flat on your lap.
2. Arrive in plently of time
Arrive in plenty of time, ideally 15 minutes early. Plan your route and make sure you know how to get there. If you have the time, do a test run to familiarise yourself with the route, parking issues, public transport etc.
3. Know exactly who you are seeing
Know exactly who you are seeing at the interview and get their names correct. Research the company and its business. As a minimum, you must read the website. Ask questions about the company to show your interest. This should not include what the salary is or how many holidays you will be getting. Leave these details to us to iron out.
4. Review your CV before the interview
Review your CV before the interview and be ready to talk about any aspect of your career and your degree (if applicable). In particular, make sure you can talk through your experience which will be of benefit to your new employer. Be an individual. If the opportunity arises, talk about the kind of person you are; your hobbies and interests and what you enjoy. Be prepared to receive questions and have examples if required.
5. Listen carefully
Listen carefully to the questions and answer questions directly. Do not feel you have to speak when there is a pause in the conversation; let the interviewer fill the gap.
6. The interview is a two way process
Remember the interview is a two way process. Work out what you want to know about the role and be confident in asking questions.
7. If you do not know the answer, say so
If you do not know an answer, say so.
8. What sets you apart from others
What sets you apart from others? Why should they choose you? Make sure you know your strengths and ensure this comes across in the interview; however, there is a fine balance between highlighting your strengths and coming across as arrogant, so be aware if this.
9. Tell the interviewer of your interest in the job
If you are interested in the job or the company, tell the interviewer.
10. Attempt to get "close" to the interviewer
Attempt to “close” the interview. At the end of an interview, try to find out how the interviewer thought it went and whether they have any reservations regarding your application, as this is the best time to counter them. Make sure you thank them for seeing you or thank them for their time when leaving.
